Sri Lanka Trekking
invite students on vacation, professionals with time in hand to come and explore Knuckles Mountain Range helping to protect this nominated world heritage site. History says in 1873, part of the Knuckles range, which lies above 1500 M was declared as a climatic reserve. Since then this area has received legal status under the Forest Ordinance and a large area was declared as a Conservation Forest in May 2005. The Knuckles Conservation Project was initiated by the Forest Department in 1987.
Despite its uniqueness and the role as a watershed, the Knuckles region faces many threats like hunting wild animals, expanding populations encroaching the forest for agriculture and housing, Illegal chena cultivation, use of pesticides in peripheral agricultural systems, cattle grazing, tree felling for timber, illegal gem mining, littering by visitors. But, the highest threat is the cardamom plantations clearing the ground canopy in natural forest within knuckles conservation Area.
Sustainable Tourism is the best income generating sources of the community in and around of Knuckles range in order to minimize the dependability of the forest for their day to day life. The community surrounded by the Knuckles Range is plantation workers and villagers.
Upgrade the knowledge on forest conservation among the local community and improves educational levels of the children, specially in English language, volunteering is the best way to make a change.
